New Chanel No. 5 ad : The One That I Want

I was so very critical of last year’s ad campaign based on Marilyn Monroe and even more critical of the Brad Pitt campaign.  But this has all the Chanel elements… beautiful, stunning visuals and fantasy, fantasy, fantasy!  The music is haunting… made me want to listen to it over and over again.

Some X factor is missing which I can’t put my finger on… but I’ll give this one 8 on 10.

    Besides the fact that it’s too long, the missing X factor for me is that there is nothing that makes me believe she ever WEARS Chanel No 5. Sure she wears the clothes and jewellery, but she sprays the scent in the air (as entertainment for her daughter). Possibly just my old-fashioned grumpiness and boredom with models, but I always think back to Catherine Deneuve and, more recently, the lovely, believable Audrey Tautou.

    • I think you may have hit the nail on the head. We only get a glimpse of that iconic bottle and these two aren’t believable. Do they look like they are in love? With themselves, maybe… but definitely NOT each other.

      Too cold. Maybe 8 on 10 is too much… but it’s a step in the right direction. These ads are mini-films… they need actresses. You’re right! And let’s not forget Carole Bouquet my absolutely favourite Chanel face.

    Yes, I agree. Great images and film work but still a bit cold and too long. Don’t even mention the Brad Pitt campaign. What were they thinking?!

      As for the length, it will be cut down to “tv time” I suppose, although this longer version will likely appear in theatres as Christmas approaches.

    This is a really beautiful advertisement and it is very smart. It has romanticism and sexiness. The fact that Giselle has a child brings also another dimension. The remake of the Grease song is spectacular. This ad campaign is really on the point. This is my favorite No5 ad (Sorry Nicole and Audrey).

    What is missing could be the No 5 perfume itself. We see logos flashing but not much perfume. Of course I would be happy with a whole film of putting on perfume. 😀 One intrinsic contradiction kept emerging through my consciousness: the model was surfing and swimming in seawater and I kept imagining it washing off her perfume.

  6. I actually quite liked the Brad Pitt campaign; thought it was interesting in a gender-bending kinda way!

  7. Initially I couldn’t figure out what was the ad about. Somewhere in the middle the perfume bottle appears for a split second and that’s it. Plus the music is a little too dull for me.
